Patterned Model for Technology Development
1997
This paper develops a perspective to modeling patterned technological information flow processes by drawing on concepts from organizational learning and knowledge creation of high technology enterprises. In such a perspective, humans and their interaction in a development team and in an industry’s ‘invisible college’ are modeled as absorbers and users of technological knowledge. The planning behavior of users is specified in terms of design patterns. A hierarchical multilevel pattern flow and repository model is described. Modes for cooperative technology project work in a case of telecommunication industry domain are examined. Questions regarding the relationship between technological know…
Indigenous Research and Romantic Nationalism
2016
In recent years, “indigenous research” and “indigenous methods” have become prominent themes in the general field of qualitative methodology. These ideas and their implications raise serious questions for the wider conduct of social research. We will outline some of those ideas, subjecting them to scrutiny, and ultimately using them to question the rise of Romanticism in contemporary social methodology. We develop these ideas to question the contemporary emphasis on the personal and the experiential in current methodological commentary.
Do university technology transfers increase firms’ innovation?
2020
Abstract We investigate how technology transfers from universities to private firms influence firm innovativeness. Using data on R&D acquisitions from universities of more than 10,000 Spanish firms for the period 2005–2013 and applying propensity score matching techniques, we find that technology transfers from universities strongly increase firm innovativeness. We next explore heterogeneous effects in order to analyze whether these gains are mediated by firm size and the business cycle. Our results suggest that the contribution of universities to firm innovation is particularly important for small firms and during the whole business cycle. The contribution of universities goes beyond its d…
Boosting organizational learning through team-based talent management: what is the evidence from large Spanish firms?
2013
Talent management (TM) can crucially help optimize organizational learning (OL) processes. The aim of this article is to study whether certain TM practices related to teamwork design and dynamics stimulate and develop learning (i.e. knowledge creation) processes within the organization and across the different ontological levels (individual, group and organizational–institutional). A model linking team-based TM and OL is tested in a sample of large Spanish companies. Our empirical results emphasize the distinction between individual–group and institutional levels of learning as the two pillars of OL. The results also highlight the role of team autonomy and creativity as crucial factors for …
A taxonomical account of knowledge creation: research directions
2011
Article published in the journal: Journal of Knowledge Management Practice. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.tlainc.com/articl253.htm. Open access. The global knowledge economy could become the next booming economy. This point can be buttressed by the flood of literature on knowledge management. New job roles have emerged in many firms to handle the challenge of the global knowledge economy. But despite the developments, there are still gaps in literature and divergent views about the subject of knowledge and how it can be created. Knowledge is an abstract term that captures the art of knowing and what is being known, is difficult to study (Davenport and Völpel 2001). Knowle…

Developing an Understanding of Organisational Knowledge Creation: A Review Framework
2017
The purpose of this paper is to develop an understanding of the dimensions of organisational knowledge creation. To this end, the literature from numerous bodies of research is reviewed. Over the past 20 years, the literature on organisational knowledge creation has significantly grown and advanced. Many new and conflicting terminologies have evolved to shed more light on the subject. As a result, there are overlaps and conflicts in the literature. The framework suggested in this paper is therefore considered to be a useful means to structure further research on the subject. This paper presents an extensive review of the organisational knowledge creation literature as well as an overview of…
Coworking spaces and makerspaces: Mapping the state of research
2022
Coworking and its merits and benefits have been under heavy scholarly investigation. Also in practice, the phenomenon with its characteristics and manifestations becomes increasingly relevant on many levels and for many different types of people and organizations. But why is that so, and how are the research activities distributed between researchers, countries, and journals? To answer these questions, we first analyzed existing literature and extracted the focal points of the respective approaches. We conducted a cluster analysis on the existing literature by analyzing data from the Web of Science. With these clusters, we show the development of the research stream and how the studies are …
Knowledge creation. The ongoing search for strategic renewal
2014
Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to analyse how changes in a set of structural design variables (i.e. liaison position, networked design, innovation teams and work teams) affect the creation of new knowledge within organizations. The enablers intention, autonomy, fluctuation and creative chaos, redundancy, variety, and trust and commitment, taken from Nonaka's framework, are used as intermediate variables.Design/methodology/approach– A sample of 167 large Spanish companies was used to empirically test a general relational model.Findings– The analysis yielded two main conclusions. First, the relationship between structural variables and enablers, and, second, the relationship of enabler…
Realizing dynamic capabilities and organizational knowledge in effective innovations: the capabilities typological map
2022
Purpose This paper aims to shed light on the mechanisms that connect dynamic capabilities and organizational knowledge in the innovative process to offer a new theoretical and practical solution considering the microfoundations of knowledge management strategies. Design/methodology/approach This research has emerged from an in-depth case study of an effective innovation (from just ethanol and sugar-production to an effective biomass plant). The study represents an “inductive inquiry,” useful to understand specific “organizational mechanisms” of innovation, where the main data came from in-depth interviews with 18 key actors. It proved to help search the development of a specific biomass pl…
